75 years since the last group of inmates breakthrough from the Jasenovac concentration camp

In April 1945, Ustashas commenced the final liquidation of the camps. This implied killing of all remaining prisoners, destroying of camp archives and burning and razing of camp buildings to the ground. Prisoners dug out graves in Donja Gradina taking out mortal remains of Jasenovac victims and burning them.

In the afternoon of 21 April 1945, the numbers of prisoners in the building: – 1,073. Ante Bakotić, was elected the leader, who was going to give a sign to start the outbreak. On Sunday, 22 April 1945, at 09:50 hrs, the sign was given for outbreak. People, armed with bricks and boards, stormed the building door. The bunker next to the gate was taken care of by Mile Ristić with a machine gun grabbed from Ustashas who thus enabled prisoners to leave the camp confines. What was important, too, was that prisoner Edo Šajer climbed a pillar cutting off telephone lines, and Ustashas were not able to call for backup.

A total of 169 prisoners managed to survive the Ustasha liquidation of the Jasenovac Camp System of which: 90 survivors of the breakout from the Ciglana camp; 12 survivors of the breakout from the Kožara camp; 2 survivors that managed to escape from the Ciglana camp immediately before the beginning of the breakout; 8 survivors who managed to hide in the Ciglana camp during the breakout; 11 survivors from the Ustasha hospital; 11 survivors from the mechanical workshop (Brzi Sklop), 14 survivors from the investigation prisons located in the place of Jasenovac; 6 survivors from the camp farms, 15 survivors from the Stara Gradiška concentration camp.
